Baking Catch Up

Am I the only one who goes through spurts of having it all together and then you have a couple weeks where it all kind of falls apart?  I'm not?  Good.  I am hoping that since I am not the only one to do this that you all will extend a bit of grace.  You know, all 9 of you who read this thing.  I am a little behind on blog posts, and am trying to get things together to participate in our community wide garage sale this weekend.  Add to that a cake pop business and homeschooling and my free time is a bit tapped out.  So this week I am digging into the archives and pulling out some oldie but goodies (OBG).  CLICK HERE to read today's OBG!

food and southern phrasing

Two things. The phones are pretty slow today, and since I'm going on 8.5 hours of sleep (it may sound blissful to you but trust me, it's not enough), I have been resting between calls. Before my last call, I realized after the fact that I had been thinking, I mean really thinking long and hard, about how much I wish we had some bacon at home b/c if we did I would make myself a toasty BLT sandwich when I get there. Then I found myself thinking about the different tastes of the bacon, lettuce, tomato, toasty bread, and how wonderful they taste when put together. Mmmmm. I think I will make Josh stop on the way home so we can pick up some bacon.

Secondly, I have heard a fair share of southern phrasing in the year that we have lived here. "I might could...", "I ain't got but...", "I'm all tore up...", but my favorite is when I ask my cusomer on the phone if they need anything else (especially if it's an older man) and he says, "Nope, that'll git it!"

happy national doughnut day, er donut day, uh....

How do you spell donut, anyway? Either way, I think it's a wonderful, amazing thing to have a National Doughnut Day. You can read about it here. My wedding cake was a Krispe Kreme donut cake, and it was A M A Z I N G. This wasn't mine in particular as none of my wedding pictures are online, but this was the one I found that looks the closest to what we had. Doesn't this just make your mouth water?

I guess if you don't like donuts this won't make your mouth water. I, however, cannot imagine not liking donuts. Hey! Someone just walked into the office with a box of donuts! Excuse me.

on the edge of your seat

Wow! I was absolutely floored by the overwhelming response of you all guessing what it was that I was mixing up! Hah! It was, my mom's oatmeal chocolate chip cookies! She would say they are someone else's, but I can't remember who, so I'm calling them hers. The texture turned out different than hers, but they were still yummy!

yum!!

The last recipe I mixed up before packing away my baking tools to move them to the new house. Can you guess what it is?

can't kick it

My poor husband is sick again. Probably never really got completely better. I'm making him chicken soup tonight! Get better, Love! =)

mom would be proud

One of my favorite memories as a child is the yummy smell of homemade bread! My mom kicks some serious batootie when it comes to making bread from scratch. I've tried a couple times to duplicate it, and although I do have the recipe, it just doesn't have that "mom touch". Oh, it still tastes divine, but somehow my loaves always come out all mis-shaped and cracked. Oh well, as long as it tastes good, and Josh loves it, so I guess that's all that matters! I won't be entering any bread making contests anytime soon anyway.....

Tips from Mom:

Kneed the bread until you think your hands will fall off, then kneed for about five minutes longer.

Whack and punch the bread, taking all your pent-up aggression out on it, again, til you think your hands will fall off.

Cover and let rise...

Yummy!!!!!

Husband approved!

oh, i feel nauseous, give me sausage!

What normal person craves sausage when they are sick? Apparantly my husband does. But, I guess that doesn't really answer my question, does it? =) Love ya, babe.

While the Man's away...

I don't even WANT to know how many calories are in this wonderful, mouth-watering concoction. Josh is working an evening shift tonight, so I saw the opportunity to do/taste some things that I don't normally do/taste when he is around, simply b/c his stomach churns at the thought of it. So here I sit, savoring my gyro (pronounced YEER-o, and make sure you roll the R - there are many different ways people deem necessary to mutilate this word, but this is the pronunciation I've gotten from every Greek I've asked so, humor me, pronounce it my way) while blogging, with the strains of GREASE playing in the background. It was quite a venture to find my gyro. We've lived in Nashville going on five months now, and until tonight my exploring was always accompanied by my other half. So, when I got the craving for a delicious gyro, I knew it was all up to me. I found a Greek sandwich shop online that looked pretty good, googled the directions, and set out. It was just starting to get dark, so I knew searching street numbers was going to be a little difficult. I found where I thought it should be, but the shop was no where around. No worries, I just decided I would head back in the direction of home, keeping my eyes out for something that peaked my fancy. Unfortunately, my entire ride home all I saw were the normal fast food joints. I relented to Subway, and decided on the one just down the road. With my keen sense of direction, I went the wrong way at the intersection next to my apartment complex. As I pulled into the plaza across the street from my house to turn around, I saw this shop with a shining halo over it. It read, "Kebob Gyro". Can you believe it? Right across the street. Anyways, long story short, it's not the best gyro I've had, but definitely in the top three.

So this blogging thing is cool. Although I think it will end up being more for my own entertainment than anything else. I'm sure some meaningful info will make it's way in amongst the meaningless drivel, so do check in from time to time! For now, it's time to hand jive, baby! =)
